About me
Hello, I'm Sherilee Honnery, a passionate milliner creating handcrafted hats and headpieces from my home studio in Rangewood, just outside Townsville, North Queensland.
My love affair with millinery began over 20 years ago at country race meetings. While my husband spent his afternoons in the bookies ring, I was captivated by the elegance, creativity and excitement of Fashions on the Field. I loved everything about racewear and was fortunate enough to win a few competitions myself.
Looking back, my creative journey really started even earlier. My mum was an incredible seamstress, often whipping up a brand-new outfit after I'd announce—usually with only a few hours' notice—that we were off to the races! I'd finish the look by reinventing the handful of hats I owned, reshaping and trimming them to match each outfit. Without realising it, I was already discovering my love for millinery.
Having a particularly small head meant ready-made hats rarely fitted
comfortably, so I decided to learn how to make my own. What began as
a practical solution soon became a lifelong passion.
I completed my first millinery workshop in Hughenden with the talented
Patti Carter and have since continued my training with many of
Australia's leading milliners. Every course has helped shape my skills,
but finding my own style has been the most rewarding part of the
journey.
Today, my signature designs are recognised for their handcrafted
leather flowers and contemporary use of acrylic pouring. I especially
love working with kangaroo leather, creating sculptural flowers that
give each piece a distinctly Australian character. Some of my leather
even came from a now-closed tannery in Hughenden, making those
pieces even more special.
I'm also inspired by the endless possibilities of acrylic pouring. The
movement, colour and texture create beautiful, one-of-a-kind elements that can never be exactly replicated—meaning every headpiece is truly unique.
My philosophy is simple: beautiful millinery should never compromise on comfort. Every piece I create is designed not only to make a statement, but to feel wonderful to wear.
Alongside creating bespoke headwear, I now enjoy sharing my passion by teaching leather flower workshops from my studio, helping others discover the joy of millinery.
Whether you're looking for the perfect racing headpiece, a stylish everyday hat, or something completely bespoke, I'd love to help create a piece that tells your story and makes you feel amazing.
